ADD/ADHD

ADD and ADHD are disorders affecting certain mechanisms of the central nervous system. These disorders can be characterized by difficulty concentrating, procrastination, inability to start or finish projects, and hyperactive, restless, impatient, and impulsive behavior. In recent years emphasis has been placed on the role of diet in these disorders, and food additives are thought to cause hyperactivity.

Include in the diet fruits that do not contain salicylates, breads, cereals, all vegetables, crackers, rice, and oats. Cold-water fish such as tuna, salmon, and herring are good sources of DHA essential fatty acids thought to be vital for brain development. A high- protein diet and low-carbohydrate diet is recommended, and only complex carbohydrates should be eaten. Limit dairy products, and eliminate refined sugar and junk food containing food additives. Do not eat apple cider vinegar, bacon, butter, candy, ketchup, chocolate, colored cheeses, chili sauce, corn, ham, hot dogs, luncheon meat, margarine, meat loaf, milk mustard, pork, salami, salt, soy sauce, sausage, tea, and wheat.
