Depression
Depression is an illness that affects the whole body, nervous system, moods, thoughts, and behavior. It affects every aspect of life, including the way you sleep, eat, act, and feel about yourself and those around you. Symptoms can last for days, weeks, months, or years. Someone with depression may show a loss of interest in things around them, withdraw from society, and become incapable of experiencing pleasure. Fatigue, sleep disturbances, insomnia, changes in appetite, headache, backaches, digestive disorders, restlessness, irritability, quickness to anger, and feelings of worthlessness and inadequacy may occur.
The condition Is not fully understood, but there appears to be a wide variety of reasons for depression triggered by stress, tension, trauma, hyper-stimulated immune system, chemical imbalances in the brain, thyroid disorders, nutritional deficiencies, poor diet, the consumption of sugar, mononucleosis, lack of exercise, endometriosis, and/or allergies.
Eat a diet including plenty of raw fruits and vegetables, soy products, whole grains, seeds, nuts, brown rice, millet, and legumes. It is important to eat plenty of complex carbohydrates to balance seratonin levels. Do not eat wheat products, as gluten has been associated with depression. Include plenty of omega-3 fats such as salmon, tuna, and mackerel in the diet and avoid all forms of sugar, artificial sweeteners, alcohol, caffeine, and processed foods.
