Diarrhea

Diarrhea is characterized by loose, watery, frequent stools and may be accompanied by symptoms such as vomiting, cramping, thirst, abdominal pain, and fever. Diarrhea causes loss of fluids and minerals known as electrolytes and can exist alone or as a result of other problems. Some causes of diarrhea include incomplete digestion of food, food poisoning, food allergies, excess alcohol consumption, bacterial, viral or other infection, and consumption of contaminated water.  Caffeine, magnesium, laxatives, and sorbitol are have been known to cause diarrhea in some people.

To combat dehydration cause by diarrhea drink plenty of liquids such as hot carob drink, ‘green drinks’, and water. Avoid very hot or cold liquids, and high fiber foods that may stress the digestive system. Eat foods that are easily digested including cooked potatoes, rice, bananas, applesauce, or toast. Do not eat dairy products or alcohol, caffeine, and spicy foods. It is also recommended to limit intake of fats and gluten.
