Drug Addiction
Drug addiction exists when the body has become dependent on a foreign substance for proper function. Research shows that the main cause of addiction is in the brain and not all people are equally sensitive to developing addiction. Neurotransmitters carry signals between neurons in the brain. One of these neurotransmitters, called dopamine, is responsible for feelings of satisfaction, arousal, and reward. When we experience these feelings the brain makes an association with that activity. Alcohol, nicotine, marijuana, cocaine, and amphetamines are a few of the substances that increase dopamine levels in the brain, and the more they are used, the more deeply these substances are associated with pleasure, reward, and create a dependency. The pleasure derived from the activity can be so profound that eliminating that activity becomes extremely difficult and causes symptoms of withdrawal.
A well-balanced, nutrient-dense diet that emphasizes fresh, raw foods and protein rich drinks is recommended. Processed foods, all forms of sugar, and junk food is to be avoided as they are a quick form of energy but can cause increased cravings.
