Phlebitis

Phlebitis is characterized by inflammation of the veins, usually in the extremities, especially the legs. If the inflammation is caused by a blood clot, or thrombus, in the vein the condition is called thrombophlebitis. In superficial thrombphlebitis the vein if harder than normal, and appears as a reddish line with swelling and pain. This is a common disorder caused by trauma, infection, standing for long periods, lack of exercise, and intravenous drug use. Thrombophlebiis can also be deep, affecting the intermuscular or intramuscular veins far below the surface. Thrombophlebitis can have various causes included minor injury of the blood vessel, abnormal clotting, poor circulation, cancer, childbirth, surgery, trauma, birth control pills, and prolonged bed rest.

For phlebitis a diet high in fresh fruits and vegetables, raw nuts and seeds, soybean products and whole grains is recommended. Reduce or eliminate consumption of red meat, dairy products, fried of salty food, processed or partially hydrogenated vegetables oils and get plenty of exercise.
