Premenstrual Syndrome
Premenstrual syndrome also known as PMS affects many women in the weeks before menstruation begins. There are a wide variety of symptoms including acne, cramps, abdominal bleeding, breast swelling, fatigue, headaches, insomnia, joint pain, nervousness, water retention, drastic mood swings, depression, anger, nervousness, and food cravings. There could be many causes for PMS including hormonal imbalance, diet, unstable blood sugar levels, food allergies, changes in carbohydrate metabolism, hypoglycemia, malabsorption, and vitamin and/or mineral deficiencies.
For PMS a diet consisting of mostly fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grain cereals and breads, beans, peas, lentils, nuts seeds, broiled chicken ,turkey , and fish is recommended as well as high protein snacks between meals. Eat plenty of complex carbohydrates and fiber to help rid the body of excess estrogen. Drink 1 quart of distilled water per day before and after the menstrual cycle. Do not eat salt, red meat, processed foods, or junk or fast foods. Avoid dairy products and refined sugars as they may cause the blocking or release of magnesium. Also avoid caffeine as it may negatively affect the central nervous system. Foods high in phytoestrogens may be helpful including soy, flaxseeds, nuts, whole grains, apples, fennel, celery, parsley, and alfalfa. Avoid alcohol and sugar in any form and get regular daily exercise. Fasting on fresh juice and spirulina just before menstruation begins may help minimize symptoms.
